Heartbeat Boxing is basically a boxing mutation of the crappy fighting game D3 made, Fighting Angels. At least that game moved at a zippy pace and was kinda playable, though. Heartbeat Boxing is just pure sludgy, clumsy pain.
So the roster appears to be the same girls from Fighting Angels, or at least a very similar lineup. And the structure is basically identical; go through a tournament (against every other girl) or a “survival” mode to unlock new outfits to dress them up in. Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball was the obvious inspiration for these games, and the girls tend to have preposterous figures stuffed into non-sanctioned outfits and accentuated by jello jiggle physics.
Fighting Angels was at least a tolerable fighter from much of the former Toshinden team, however. This is just some serious oof all around. Movement is super slow, unresponsive and clumsy … they basically just took the fighting game engine, made it intentionally clunky and limited it to punches to try to approximate boxing.
Opponents seem to never stay down for the count unless you chip off all their health, which can take absolutely forever. The best move here is to set the round length for maximum so you can TKO foes by spamming your meaty hooks, which is a lot quicker.
But while the girls seem to have a pretty similar move set, they all have their own special moves. Foes in the later matches are a big risk to TKO you with these, as they knock you down often even if your health is high and they basically just spam them whenever they get near you.
So unless you really dig the Perv Mode and zooming in on the various girls while non-nude jello boobs flail around in highly unrealistic style, there is zero reason to slog through the clumsy pain of this game.
