A Night With Troi is only our second text-only game added to the site, and I feel like I should issue a clarification at this juncture. For the most part, we won’t be covering erotic text games that don’t have any real gameplay. And even the ones with gameplay will probably need to be particularly noteworthy in some way. The first game of this type that we covered, Softporn, was a proper text adventure first and was the basis for the Leisure Suit Larry series, plus it had a Japan-only remake with graphics that a lot of people don’t know about.
Honestly, A Night With Troi would probably be the type of thing we would normally skip … but I’m including it just because I find the premise funny. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean it was any fun at all to play.
The game is more like A Night With Compliant Sex Doll Troi as she starts out all lathered up, ready to go and doing nothing but sitting there waiting for your orders. No seduction, no real puzzles (other than having to find lube in her bathroom for certain activities), no real challenge. Well, there actually is a bit of challenge … in getting the very limited parser to understand anything other than UNDRESS, FUCK and BUTTFUCK. It doesn’t understand a lot of common things you would think it would understand.
It also has no real Star Trek atmosphere other than a handful of throwaway references if you bother to look around Troi’s quarters. There’s no real conversation at all, and the sex scenes are written like generic porn scenes that could feature anyone. The only concrete “goal” of the game is to encounter every possible scene (your dude has the recharge power of Rance, maybe futuristic technology not mentioned on the show is involved) by putting Troi in different positions in the different rooms (five in total).
This game is nothing compared to horrors the internet has unleashed since, but it was a funny and edgy little novelty by 1991 sci-fi and gamer nerd standards (that you almost certainly downloaded from the neighborhood BBS rather than the internet). A relic of a simpler, more innocent age.
