From the makers of assorted PC Engine smut titles comes this video poker game, but the presence of smut is not immediately obvious. Firing up AV Poker presents you with “normal” and “special” modes at the title screen. “Normal” is just a play-for-fun sort of mode that gives you 1000 credits to mess around with, and will get you nowhere in Kramer’s epic quest for hentai. “Special” mode is the one where the hanky panky is. You gradually head around the world, hitting up four casinos in different countries to convince a girl in each to desnude for you in appreciation of your video poker skillz.
There are three different pics for each girl, all done in the same digitized pinup style of Games Express’s other titles (like Strip Fighter 2 and Lady Sword). It looks like they were possibly based on real models and you get a nice full body scroll while they wink at you. Conquer all four lands and you enter the Harem of Pleasure at the end or something.
The overall aesthetic is very basic in-game but pretty pleasant, similar vibe to the more in-depth King of Casino. There’s a cool little title screen, a few pleasant little tunes during the video poker games (which you can toggle on and off at any time), and the game interface is simple but effective. The one thing I didn’t like is that you have to mash the button to bet each individual credit, which is gonna be at least in the tens of button presses per hand to play effectively. Not gamepad-friendly at all.
And get ready to save scum if you really want to bring the VP girls to heel, as this is really not very favorable video poker. It’s basically the structure of Bonus Poker but with a crappier pay table: no “jacks or better” hands that win, and no special payouts for getting certain types of four-of-a-kinds. Or you can just use a secret code at the title screen to see all the pics.
