The manual for Seymour Butts 2 makes the following bold claim: “This product is designed to be a game which changes each time you play. It is almost impossible to see everything on these two disks within the rest of your natural life. Just when you think you’ve figured out part of the game, the next time you play that whole strategy gets blown to shit. You can play the game 24 hours a day for a quarter of a year without ever repeating the path you took the first time you played. That is over 2160 manhours to you and me.”
Well, first of all, that’s quite the exaggeration. The game’s content really consists of a couple of dozen videos total, linked by limited “choose your own adventure” sort of options similar to the first game. So I’m trying to figure out how they arrived at the justification for this claim, and my best guess is that they’re counting every possible way in which you could order the necessary operations, even though you keep arriving at the same places.
That’s not to say that Butts 2 isn’t more complex as a game than its prequel. It comes on two CDs that are mostly used for more videos, but it does add at least a bit more legitimate gameplay. But let’s start by setting the scene. The premise of this one is that Seymour is pining for the girl in the backwards baseball cap from the first game, seemingly having decided she’s his dream girl and one and only. Problem is she has dyed her hair blonde, changed her name, and moved to Canada. So the game is about Seymour raising money to purchase a plane ticket to the great white north and stalk her good and proper.
I actually did a little research and it turns out this girl was actually Seymour’s IRL wife through the ’90s and that they made an absolutely massive series of adult videos together. So, heartwarming, I guess?
Anyway, this setup promises Canadian Bacon hijinks but Canada is actually barely seen in the game, with most of it consisting of Seymour trawling So Cal for girls again. You set up the moneymaking opportunities by moving around a map of Seymour’s house to access his phone, computer, TV and such. There’s actually some tactical bill paying in this segment as Seymour is behind on literally all of his utilities and catching up on particular bills (the phone being an obvious first choice) opens up more opportunities.
But ultimately, there are few ways to make money on Disc 1: clean the neighbor’s pool, search the couch, find a dildo and bring it to your pal from Hokuto no Ken world who apparently has to make an expedited adult video. But it really feels like this is all just filler until your creepy Uncle Moe shows up out of the blue, and declares that to make REAL money you’ll need to hunt down some attractive girls and convince them to sleep with random Johns that you lure them back to or something. You’re sent to Disc 2 for that, and it’s the meat of the game, and the place where there actually is some replay value as you can’t get all of the girls in one pass.
This came out about two years after the sequel and apparently the Butts AV empire was in a better place, with an overall more attractive lineup of women and some of the bigger-name porn stars of the time (like Asia Carrera, who seems to be in ALL of these ’90s CD-ROM games somehow, and Tiffany Towers) putting in appearances in this outing.
So I guess it has some improvements and selling points over the prequel, but in the end it’s still basically a video collection of clips of different porn stars with extra steps to actually watch the scenes (unless you just browse the disc files directly, as with the prequel all the videos are just sitting there as Quicktime .MOV files). And though this came out in the Win 95 era you’ll probably need to emulate Windows 3.1 one way or another to run it.
