Original Release: Dasaku Laboratory, 2018, PC
A swordy (actually macey) side-scroller in which a young priestess fights aroused monsters
Den of Chaos (PC, Dasaku Laboratory, 2018)
Where to Buy: DLSite
Den of Chaos opens looking like it’ll be a riff on the Princess Crown / Odin Sphere games, and I guess loosely it kinda is … but it’s more like something like Metamoquester in that it’s essentially just a chain of boss battles with rest breaks in between to save and buy items.
It’s in Japanese with no English option so I’ll have to do some interpretation here, but you play as a female priestess of some sort who wields a mace. She also eventually gets magic attacks off of defeated enemies, and can use purchased potions for healing and such. More on those aspects later, but for now, we start out being tasked by some king (I guess Anushand the 19th or whatever) to descend into the depths of dungeons and rescue elf girls who are being molested by an assortment of the usual monster suspects.
So you fight a battle to free an elf girl from a grapist monster, if the monster wins you get graped instead. But you still get EXP and money and get to try again. The monsters have long life bars and often readily out-damage you so I guess the intended purpose was to lose a few times and watch the sexo animation as you level up.
The action has sort of a sloppy MMO feel, it’s never really clear whether or not attacks will stun-lock the boss so it’s sometimes hard to tell when to be aggressive. They also often have special attacks where they are unhittable during the animation and you just have to dodge and wait. It’s kinda like Actraiser boss fights but a little suckier. Another big issue is that I could never figure out how to actually use the items or spells. There’s an instruction screen off the main menu (third option down) that points to them being on the Function keys and numerals 4-9 respectively, but they never seemed to work in-game. Absolutely nothing is in English here so I have no idea what I was doing wrong.
Den of Chaos almost has some potential but between the generally sloppy action, repetitive and grindy structure, no English and confusion about some game elements, no native gamepad support, and the same-old same-old monster graping it’s a pass for me. Word online is that it also only has five levels, but the author is also only asking about four bucks for it on DLSite.
