Girls Hunter is a major overhaul of Fire Red with a heavily edited map, an entirely new story and characters, tons of sprite editing, and a bunch of girls to hunt alongside the usual Pokemon.
What’s that last bit? Well, as the name indicates, that’s the central theme of this sprawling ROM hack. We play in a darker, hornier version of Pokemon World where Team Rocket is a crew of insane lesbian dominatrixes that have developed “Human Balls” that can capture girls. Apparently they’ve run wild with this enterprise of flesh trade, grown to a tremendous size and are dominating the world, and we play as a rookie Pokemon trainer who sets out to take them down by allying with her old friend on the regional police force.
Don’t worry about loli stuff here, the story establishes at the outset that “Human Balls” can only capture adult women (just repeat to yourself, it’s just a horny ROM hack, I should really just re-lax). For practical purposes, what this boils down to is that you now capture the female trainer NPCs and occasional scripted Team Rocket battlers along with the usual Pokedex. They of course can be deployed to fight and level up as standard Pokemon do, but some impressively extensive pervy sprite editing allows you to put on and remove their clothes as well as optionally bind them up with ropes and a ball gag if they are non-compliant.
Though it’s impressive in what it does within the limits of a simple ROM hack, the “H” content is thus necessarily limited. Yet the game has become something of a minor phenomenon among weirdos in the last couple of years, even inspiring a bunch of streaming on mainstream tube sites. What seems to be drawing people in is the extensive story and lore, which appears to just be perfunctory parody when you first start out but actually expands quite a bit all the way through the end of the game. The game even has a couple of extensive “bad end” branches, one if you lose to a Team Rocker member at any time and the other if you lose in a new tower location packed with mummies, where you get enslaved and trapped in a small new area you can explore that offers some more plot stuff and unique battles.
It’s an interesting piece of work with a lot of elbow grease put into it, but I didn’t get too far simply because it asks waaaay too much grinding of you. From reading around a bit I’m seeing the game spans 30 to 40 hours of gameplay to complete everything, but I’m guessing from the smaller overall size of the map a good chunk of that is grindery. Every time you enter a new area, there’s either a forced story battle or a crop of random monsters / trainers that are too overwhelming and require you to go back and grind a bunch of your troops like 5+ more levels to make it. It’s especially tiresome if you’ve already played Fire Red as you’re kinda going through the same motions. But if you got the time and inclination for all that and you like the theme, it’s an impressive effort from a very dedicated perv.
